The Value of Snake Draft Picks In An Auction Draft

For fantasy football leagues wanting to switch to an auction draft after allowing future snake draft picks to be exchanged in trades

Although I fully anticipate that we'll ban the trading of future draft picks at next off-season's summit, we may need to understand how to value snake draft picks in an auction draft this off-season. Rather than make you scroll down the page, here's my conclusion on the conversion:

Below is an explanation of how these values were calculated, with a link to the relevant worksheet at the bottom of the page.

After the singular auction draft in Bragging Rights history was completed in the 2021 off-season, the results of the draft were uploaded to our BR Almanac.

In looking at the data uploaded, you can see that the results of the final four selections for four owners of the league are missing. To fill in these gaps, I determined how much of each owner's budget remained and divided each of those numbers by four to determine averages for the remaining selections.

For each owner, I sorted their selections in descending order of "Cost". Each owner's costliest selection was treated as their 1st round pick, their second costliest as their 2nd pick, etc and an average was taken from across all owners.

Discerning readers may be noticing that these values don't reflect the conversions shared at the start. Why?

These results are achieved when viewing the auction draft through the lens of a snake drafter. But if we're to transition to an auction draft, our perspective must as well. An auction draft lacks the rigid structure of "rounds". An auction draft allows you the ability to select multiple players you may consider 1st rounders in a snake draft, the consequences of this being that you may not be able to afford as many players from mid-rounds and must fill out your roster with players that would go in later rounds.

Keeping this in mind, it makes more sense to sort all players selected and their corresponding values. The team that selected them is irrelevant in this conversion. Averaging each grouping of eight as a "round", the final results were calculated. The calculations for the final results, and all of the above data, can be found at:
